Brown & Mitchell, Inc. (BMI) was established in 1967 and has developed into a comprehensive multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm offering professional civil engineering, environmental, surveying, and drafting services to a wide variety of clients.  Originally established as Brown Engineers by Mr. Joseph L. Brown, Jr., the firm has earned the reputation as one of the strongest engineering firms on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

In April of 1987, Mr. Bill Mitchell joined the firm and shortly thereafter became President and Owner of Brown & Mitchell, Inc.  Under Mr. Mitchell’s leadership, the firm has grown substantially, expanding staff and services. Surveying capabilities were added in 1991 to provide cost effective and timely response to clients and for support to the engineers.  In 1992, an environmental specialist was added to the staff, allowing the firm to offer environmental consulting services to address emerging environmental issues.  In October 2003, BMI Environmental Services, LLC (BMI/ES),  a limited liability corporation, was formed that focuses exclusively on environmental issues.  The staff of BMI/ES is comprised of former BMI environmental employees and is complimentary to BMI (See website link).  As an added benefit, two BMI employees were certified in the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Program administered by the United States Green Building Council.  The program was established to help meet the growing demand from the public and private sectors for “green buildings” and recognizes professionals with expertise in LEED requirements.  BMI is a proud member of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Since 2008, Mr. Mitchell has been reducing his workload, turning over leadership and ownership of BMI to Dax Alexander.  Mr. Alexander has been a long-time employee of BMI and is very familiar with every aspect of the firm’s procedures.  As President of BMI, Mr. Alexander will strive to continue the firm’s priorities - quality work and satisfaction of the client and affected community – in the same manner as his predecessors, Mr. Brown and Mr. Mitchell.

These additions, along with state of the art technology, have further broadened the scope of services which BMI can provide and are further examples of the firm's commitment to maintain its leadership role in the field of professional engineering.
